Family weekend fun and meeting Martha

As mentioned here we had a busy weekend. Two of our family friends celebrated an important milestone for their little ones, Liam my godson celebrated his 2nd birthday and Terd had a Christian dedication. Liam’s 1st Birthday Race Car Cake I just realized now that I’ve been making Liam’s birthday cake every year. For his first birthday I made a cars themed cake and for this year a Mickey Mouse themed cake. Liam love Mickey Mouse and you would find him quietly seated in front of the TV whenever the famous Disney character is on. This is just a simple cake using basic shapes. I used a circle cookie, flower and little bird cutters. I kept asking Vierte for approval if the cake looked nice and he would make a comments like “Ma put more here and here” and of course I obliged. Delivered: Bag & Shoe Cake

I accepted a cake challenge for a friends birthday with a red and black color theme. G had a particular cake design in mind-a red shoe and red bag with some black outline on top of a carrot cake. With two weeks to prepare I searched net and found lots of help watching youtube and blog tutorials on how to carve a bag cake and shape a shoe. PinkCakeBox tutorial on high-heel shoe and ChefGRFX bag tutorial helped me to complete the cake as well as the lovely cakers over at CakeCentral.  A week before my deadline I made some practice cake and shoe using a homemade fondant . First I had a hard time with my usual fondant recipe it just won’t hold it’s shape, after I cover the cake I see holes on the side of the bag it seem that the fondant was melting. My friend G requested that I make a girly cake for her birthday, a shoe and bag cake. *gulp I got excited and scared I haven’t done anything like that and I have always refused friends request to make them some cute fondant cake. Sad to say i’m not artistic not like my mom and sister, I can’t for the life of me draw a straight line without a ruler. G insisted that she wants me and no one else to make the cake for her because she knows I can do it. There’s a cake on the table and V declares “It’s my birthday today!” My demanding little customer with Debbie Brown’s “50 Easy Party Cakes” sat on the carpet flipping pages deciding on the cake design he want. V: I know! I want a dinosaur cake. Can we make it now? I will help. M: I will try my best to make you one. V: You can do it Mama. Meet V’s dino cupcake 🙂 I’m using a new fondant recipe suggested by my friend Sandy. I just have a little problem with the fondant it easily breaks when shaped or rolled and it’s way too oily compared to the usual MMF. I’m asking help online hopefully I get advise on how to fix the problem. *** and btw we are not celebrating any birthday we just happen to have a cake coz it’s the time of the month that my hormones go crazy!

I’ve been reading a whole lot of cake decorating ever since I was pregnant with Vierte. I was excited about his 1st birthday cake and it was my dream to make a handsome cake for him. Sadly I havent done one fondant cake for his birthday. Now that he will start preSchool and I really would want to have some income baking cakes and designing them as well I am once again slowly learning how to work with fondant.
