Kuya V’s 8th Birthday

Last week, our eldest Kuya V turned 8 years old and this year we all decided not to organize a party, instead he asked that we do several things he really liked. His birthday weekend coincided with the Islamic New Year which meant we had Thursday till Saturday to celebrate. First thing to do on the list is play and have picnic at the beach. We did just that with our Filipino blogging family here in Dubai. Bbq, games with friends and cake! A wheelboard – We know that he really likes one but it’s too expensive and I find it dangerous. Luckily, I won an instagram competition hosted by Fun City – come, play! He can use the board indoors and always wearing a helmet. We watched the movie Pan at Vox Cinema at the newest wing of Mall of the Emirates.   iFly with Dad – a self challenge to conquer his fear of heights iFly Dubai. Last year he promised us and challenged himself that when he turns 8 years old he will try to conquer …

Wilton Method of Cake Decorating Course 1, Day 4

Last session for our Wilton Course 1 is all about buttercream roses. Since it’s our last day we were also asked to bring our final cake which we get to do final design in the class. I had a hard time getting the roses done the Wilton way, it took me more or less 10 tries to get an acceptable rose. For the class I bought 2 kinds of buttercream – store bought and homemade, the obvious difference between them is the store bought ones have smooth petal edges while the other is not.   On to a my final cake, I bought a 4 layer 8″ cake in it’s final iced stage to school. I initially planned to make buttercream flowers a week before class but was not able to even make one. I piped leaves as top cake border and placed the roses I made during class, ran out of time to make more flowers to make it look like a bouquet cake. Anyway, I’m still happy how my cake turned out.

Wilton Method of Cake Decorating Course 1, Day 3

Day 3 of our Building Buttercream Skills course was all about flowers. We were asked to bring 8 treats that has a flat surface and shaped either round or rectangle. Ms. A taught us to pipe Bead, for borders Leaves Grass Star Drop Flower Swirl Drop Flower Daisy Sunflower Zinnia As always, while Ms. A did a demonstration on how to make each flower it looked so easy. I had a hard time specially with making daisy and I made use of the leftover buttercream from day 2 which still works fine in piping but we noticed that it was already oily and a lot of air has been incorporated into it. Lesson’s learned: Use a medium soft icing consistency Turn flower nail anti-clockwise. Place nail on the 1st line of your finger and move with the help of thumb towards the end. Consistent pressure control Let the piping tip do it’s work The yellow ones were made by Ms. A and the middle was well my creation.  Final reminder is to Practice…Practice…Practice…   Homework for …

Wilton Method of Cake Decorating Course 1, Day 2

For the 2nd session of our Wilton Method of Cake Decorating Course we were asked to prepare a firm 8″ cake, 2 recipe’s of buttercream, piping gel and cake filling. I prepared all of these Thursday evening because we have a busy weekend, every thing was stored in the refrigerator and thawed Friday night for my class the next day. I was not feeling well for my class, didn’t get enough sleep trying to fix my iPhone which got stuck to Error Code 53 after doing the latest ios update. My iphone 6 still not working, Argh! That’s another story to tell, back to my class. Ms. A (our teacher) showed us how to: level a cake using a cake leveler separate cake in two create a dam place filling apply a crumb coat final coat and smoothen surface I have done the following task before, it felt good that even if I’ve never attended a class prior to this one I was actually doing it correctly. While waiting for our crumb coat to crust Ms, A showed us new methods: …

Wilton Method of Cake Decorating Course 1, Day 1

Baking cakes and decorating is something that I’ve learned from friends and watching videos online. I have always wanted to enroll myself to a cake decorating class ever since we moved here in Dubai, but never found time. I finally made time to enhance my cake decorating skills and enrolled to The Wilton Method of Cake Decorating Course 1 – Building Buttercream Skills. Although I have been baking cakes, decorating them completely with just buttercream scares me. The only cake I decorated not using fondant is my ube cake and I hide my cupcakes buttercream imperfections by adding sprinkles.   Inquired about the class schedule at Wilton’s Gold and Diamond Park store and it was perfect for us. My LittleOnes and Daddy C urged me to enroll right that moment with the assurance that they will be ok without me.

Peppa Pig Cake and Cookies

Sheila of AB & Me asked if I could help her make cookies and fondant cake for her Little B’s 3rd birthday.  She has been doing DIY birthday party for Little B since she turned 1 year old. Amazing Mama! The last big fondant cake I made was my friend’s wedding cake, before I gave birth to LittleMiss C. We worked on the cake & cookies for 1 week.

V is 6 and his MineCraft Cake

V designed his Minecraft cake. It was a week long holiday here in Dubai when LittleMan V celebrated his 6th birthday. We initially planned to have a family celebration and have dinner at his favorite restaurant  but he insisted that I make him a cake and have 3 of his friends from school come over. Aside from playing Skylanders he’s also into Minecraft (I think every kid is) so before he request me to make him a figure cake I suggested he design his very own minecraft cake. He’s eyes lit up and requested that he make the cake with me.
