End of First Term Party

Kuya V’s class spent the winter vacation preparing for their first term exams. The school has changed the examination format from 3 exams to just 2 major exams with assessments in between. Last year assessments and exams where scheduled before school break, this change is not something I (or my fellow parents) are happy about.

Believe me when you are a parent, school homework and tests is so stressful. I have never prepared and studied this much during my time. Let’s not talk about how I did in school, my Mom did see me go up the stage and receive my diploma.

The kids deserve (parents as well) a treat for the hard work and doing their best. We surprise them with an “End of First Term Exam Party” at Eataly. I joined the giveaway hosted by The Son and The Moon and won this party package.

The party was scheduled on the last day of their exam, we had 13 confirmed kids, a mix of Kuya V’s year 3 classmates and family friends. Excited 8 year old kids approached me asking what’s going to happen in the party, they all squealed with delight when they found out that they are going to make pizza.

EatalyPizzaWorkshop1

It was the first time for most of the kids to make pizza with a chef!

All of them were asked to line up to get a their disposable aprons and wash hands inside Eataly’s working kitchen.

Eataly Pizza Chef Enzo

Chef Enzo working his magic on a pizza dough

Eataly team asked  kids to smell and guess name of ingredients available in their table – they had flour, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, basil leaves and fresh pizza dough.

Chef Enzo announced that they will eat what they made, it got the kids seriously working on their pizza’s.

They were done making pizza and was ushered to the table were a goodie bag was waiting for them.

Eataly Pizza Workshop Certificate

and a Pizza Workshop Certificate.

Each of the kids pizza were assigned 1 unique ingredient like eggplant and sweet pepper for easy identification which pizza belongs to whom.

Congratulations CakeJust when the kids taught the party was over, a big cake was delivered in their table. A congratulations cake with candles. These made the kids really happy! We sang “Congratulations Year 3” to the tune of happy birthday.

Year 3 still has a long way to go before moving up the next level. We are so proud of you all for giving your best in your first term exams.

What we think about the party?

EatalyParty

Venue: Restaurant area of Eataly, The Dubai Mall

It would be nice if they had a dedicated room for the party. Kids were happily chatting (and loud),  playing and running around the restaurant, they were disturbing other diners.

Food: Pizza + Fruit Juice + Cake

It took between 5-10 minutes before the pizza’s were out of the oven and the kids were already hungry, some appetizers will keep them busy while waiting for their pizza. Unfortunately, I cannot find their party packages online.  We won this party package from a blog giveaway.

Activity: Pizza making

Coloring books and additional games like recalling what ingredients were used will keep the kids occupied while waiting for their food. Bored children can mean chaos so it would be a good idea to prepare another activity to keep them busy. A complimentary pass to Kidzania or Sega Republic is another good option they can include in the package.

Overall, it was a great party, all 13 kids had fun and according to V they still talk about it in school. Chef Enzo and his team did a good job engaging each kids, they took time to check on the kids work and answer their questions. No matter how noisy and impatient the kids were, the team maintained their patience.

Children as young as 3 yrs old and those young at heart (adults) will enjoy the pizza workshop party.

Afternoon at the Park

For us desert dwellers, Dubai weather is freezing at 18c well not so much for my children who refuse to wear jackets when we go out.

LittleMiss & Baby Alive LucyAn afternoon in the park with  no gadgets for the kids just the good old running and getting themselves dirty. LittleMiss was happy playing mama to her baby alive doll Lucy.

Picnic with Paul

That afternoon we stopped by Paul at Sahara Centre to get a complimentary picnic bag filled with delicious sandwiches, pastries, fresh juice and salads. Paul’s picnic concept is convenient for those spur of the moment picnic outdoors.

Disclaimer: We were given a complimentary picnic basket from Paul.

A family dream trip to Vienna, Austria

Growing up looking at photos of my Papa’s business trip and watching movies made me want to travel and see the world. I was able to recognize Europe on the world map when my Dad left for a month long training to France. The postcards, souvenirs and stories during his trip made me dream and want to explore Europe.  My dream to be able to set foot at Europe came true when I was given a chance to volunteer for World Youth Day 2005.

The movie Sound of Music played a big part on why I want to visit Austria, but sadly I did not get a chance during my trip. It is still on my list of places to visit and hopefully this time with my own family. Travelling with the family needs a lot of planning since we need to be able to cater to everyone’s interest. One thing I know for sure is that we all agree that to fully explore and immerse oneself during trips is to explore the food scene.

Join me as we explore the food scene of Vienna, Austria in the comforts of our home (for now).

It’s always a good idea to start our day with a cup of coffee paired with Demel cake at one of Vienna’s must stop coffee shop, Demel.

Grab some more pastries on your way out, we might get hungry as we try to find our way to Burggarten. Living in the concrete jungle of Dubai make our eyes long for some greenery and the court garden is the best place to hang out and let the kids run.

My kids are hungry after all that walk and running around the garden so it’s time to get lunch. This time let us explore the city riding a horse carriage or a Fiaker, the horse clickety clack steps will lull the kids to take a nap.

It’s time to wake them up as we approach St. Stephans Cathedral, we get off here and say our thanks for the blessing of visiting this beautiful place. A few steps away from the cathedral is Vienna’s oldest coffee shop, the Café Diglas. I heard from friends that this is the best place to be among the locals and not that crowded with tourists. We are craving for bratwurst and schnitzel for lunch. Make sure you leave some room for pastries.

I think it’s time to head back to the hotel and give the kids a proper rest and prepare for an evening stroll.

Thank you for joining me in this armchair journey to Vienna, Austria.

Have you been to Vienna? What are your top 5 must do in Vienna with kids?

Our first Xiao Long Bao experience

We finally got a chance to dine at  Din Tai Fung, the latest restaurant franchise to open it’s doors here in Dubai at Mall of the Emirates. Two of Din Tai Fung’s franchise in Hong Kong was awarded a Michelin Star.

Xiao Long Bao, Din Tai FungThe Taiwanese restaurant is known for it’s Xiao Long Bao (XLB), a dumpling with soup inside. Anthony Bourdain refers to them as “pillow of happiness.”

How To Eat Xiao Long BaoWe informed our server that it was our first time and she patiently explained how to eat the famous dumpling. She also prepared a ginger, soy and rice vinegar dip to complete our XLB experience.

To eat the Xiao Long Bao:

  1. Make the soy ginger sauce. Our server warned us that the dumpling is piping hot, wait a few minutes before eating.
  2. Take your XLB and dip in your soy ginger sauce.
  3. Place your XLB in the spoon and poke a small hole to release the broth. Blow some steam off and enjoy.

The original XiaoLongBao is made with pork but the restaurant doesn’t have a license so we settled for the Crab and Chicken XLB.

Eating the XLB was a memorable experience. The dumpling was flavorful and we preferred it without the sauce. I hope they open another branch in a hotel with a pork license, I’m sure the original pork XLB will be even more delicious.

We also ordered other dumplings on the menu.

SznShrimpChicken

Schezhuan Chicken and Shrimp dumplings was describe to us as a dumpling serve on a bowl with a spicy schezhuan sauce. Daddy C declared this one the best dumpling we’ve had that afternoon.

Braised Beef Noodle Soup

Daddy ordered Braised Beef Noodle Soup which sadly did not impress him. The beef needed an hour more of boiling to make it tender and the broth was good but needed something more.

DTF Kiddie PlateDTF does not have a separate children’s menu which is ok, we ordered fried rice and dumplings for the kids. LittleMiss was offered a high chair and they provided a kiddie plate as well, that made her really happy.

Both kids were happy with Shirmp & Chicken Pot Stickers and Steamed Shrimp & Chicken Shumai. They wanted to order more, we didn’t because we already need to leave for another commitment.

Overall, we enjoyed our meal and dining experience. The staff were friendly and patient with all our inquiries.

Have you eaten at Din Tai Fung? What was your favorite?

A request for more pedestrian friendly Dubai

More Ped Xing please

Our area which consists mostly of residential building has 6 schools and two hospitals nearby. The traffic situation can be busy in the mornings during school week and scary during off hours.

Ped Xing – means pedestrian crossing

Pedestrian – a person walking

LittleMiss C and I have been walking to and from school everyday since she started. Her nursery was just 5 minutes on foot from our old place and now the new school is just 10 minutes walk from our place. It’s convenient, healthy and economical to just walk specially during Dubai winter.

On our walks we have only seen 2 Ped Xing lines and notice a lack of road signs that inform drivers a school is present. With 6 schools in the area motorists will encounter parents with children walking and trying to cross the street. Most of the drivers respect pedestrians and take time to stop even if Ped Xing is not available, sadly some do not stop.

We need to cross 1 main road and 2 residential streets to get to school. On the main road a crossing line is available  but sometimes it is much more convenient for us two cross between two bus stops. In the morning when the road is congested with cars and we are crossing with fellow pedestrians, it is less scary to cross without Ped Xing. In the afternoon though we only use Ped Xing, crossing the street during this time is scary and most motorists don’t care that you are walking with kid.

Where and how will people cross the street safely when a pedestrian foot bridge or lines are not available?

As a parent and commuter I would like to request the following:

A Ped Xing available between two bus stops.

A shaded foot bridge for students walking to and from school.

or A traffic enforcer present to assist students walking to and from school.

More road signs to inform motorists that school is in the area.

Lunch at Boulevard Kitchen, Manzil Downtown

The whole stretch of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard offers various restaurants and has become a haven for food lovers. Our latest find came in a lunch invitation at Boulevard Kitchen of  Manzil Downtown.

I gave our reservation details at the reception and they seem confused and surprised that we were there. A gracious lady asked where we want to be seated, the kids replied that they would love to sit outside, the courtyard area, she informed us that we can’t because it’s the smoking and shisha area. We settled at the corner table with a view of the open kitchen, the kids always enjoy watching the chef’s work.

Boulevard Kitchen Open KitchenIt was surprising that we were only handed a two pages lunch menu, refreshing as it gave an impression that the dishes were carefully chosen. They now have a 3 course menu selection with shisha for AED 119 per person from 12pm until 4pm.

We started off with dishes from the Soup & Salad selection and chose Grilled Calamari Skewers and Smoked Salmon.

Boulevard Kitchen Grilled Calamari

Roasted peppers and tomato salsa with chili vinaigrette complimented well with the perfectly charred calamari. Even Kuya V loved the dish, he ate the calamari with the salsa and peppers.

Boulevard Kitchen Smoked SalmonThis is probably one of the best smoked salmon I’ve ever had, presented on top of a flatbread with marinated onion and dill mascarpone. It is a rich creamy appetizer that could be shared among 3 people as it can be overwhelming for just one person.

LittleMiss was looking for the kids menu because she was craving for crunchy chicken and French fries. The Boulevard Kitchen did not offer a separate kid’s menu and when I asked our server if they could prepare crunchy chicken strips for LittleMiss she explained that the kitchen  can only prepare what’s on the menu.

Boulevard Kitchen Chicken BreastWe finally settled for Chicken Breast with cauliflower and parsnip puree, spinach and grilled asparagus for LittleMiss, she just asked to please add some French fries to which the server  agreed.  The chicken was juicy and seasoned well, most importantly our little girl enjoyed every bite. “Not crunchy but still good with fries.”

I hope they offer a kid friendly selection for young diners soon.

Boulevard Kitchen Beef BurgerKuya V had Beef Burger with smoked Veal strips and served with fries. I didn’t got a chance to taste but according to V it was a good burger.

Boulevard Kitchen Beef TenderloinBeef Tenderloin done medium well was served with sautéed mushrooms, spinach salad and pomegranate. The meat was seasoned well, soft and juicy; it was delicious accompanied with the sauce.

Boulevard Kitchen Spaghetti Alaskan CrabSpaghetti with Alaskan Crab, lemon butter, zest, chili and basil. The lemon sauce with a right amount of chili heat really went well with the generous amount of crab meat.

We were already stuffed and sadly did not have any room for dessert.

Overall we had a good dining experience, the staff were friendly, attentive and we had fun talking to them. The Spaghetti with Alaskan Crab and Grilled Calamari won our votes for best dish.

The Boulevard Kitchen will be launching a Family Brunch this 2016, that will offer a special dining experience for the young diners. The best of children’s entertainment which includes face painting, crafts and various activities will keep our kids busy. After all the fun, kids will be spoilt with a dedicated buffet made specially for them.

The Boulevard Kitchen Brunch | Every Friday from 12.30PM to 4PM

AED 295 (with house beverages); AED 195 (soft drinks & juices); AED 95 (children between 6 and 12 years old). Children below the age of 5 dine with our compliments.

It’s the first day back to school after the winter break. Fried chicken was baked the night before and the steamed rice prepared that morning.

January 3 Hello Kitty BentoLittleMiss starts FS1 in her new school. I wanted to prepare something that will make her smile while she’s in school. She was crying when I left her but was very happy when I picked her up after class. Thankful that her schoolmates made her feel happy.

January 3 Bento Fried ChickenKuya V was excited to see his friends. It’s going to be a busy month for us since we are preparing for his term 1 exams. How I wish they stuck with the exam schedules we had last school year, it was less stressful for all of us.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year 2016

Happy New Year!

We welcomed 2016 in the comfort of our new home. The initial plan to watch fireworks live like we always do every year was cancelled since we wanted to finish unpacking and not leave the house all alone.

For NYE dinner we prepared ham, sinuglaw, garlic shrimps, fruit salad and Moist Chocolate Candy Cake that LittleMiss and I baked. It has been a tradition in our family that we welcome the new year with at least 13 round fruits to signify prosperity for the coming year.

Christmas2015

We wish you a happy and prosperous 2016!
